Affecting effects 
towards peaceful states

TiLTING VERTICALITIES is a body of work that nurtures and expands a collective holding—a choreographic space, process, and immersive experience unfolding within an artwork, where we engage with, and explore notions of grounding, interdependence, tension, rest, subtle movement, care, peace and support.

 TiLTING VERTICALITIES&#38;nbsp;(exercise #±1) requires more than one person involved for it to work out; balancing, rebalancing and counterbalancing through our own, and shared gestures, inside a &#38;nbsp;painting resting on elastic natural rubber latex bands—echoing the healing and restorative qualities of latex to rubber trees, forming organic structures for us to inhabit, as movement and conversations emerge from hanging out and moving together.
All in all, a nourishing and safe space emerges—shaped by everyone who takes part—generating peaceful states within the shared space of the artwork, as we hold each other gently in the art of holding together.&#38;nbsp;READ MORE
—TiLTING VERTICALITIES is&#38;nbsp;generally shared with &#38;amp; for cultural performance public programmes, research and educational contexts, groups and individual workshop-LAB sessions. Its first public iteration premiered at the 58th Venice Art Biennale—Giudecca Art District’s flagship exhibition Body As Home. It has since been presented at Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome—MACRO ASILO, at Tate Britain Archive and Public Records Catalogue in a collective exhibition with the Royal College of Art Situated Practice group, Archive(r), the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company—,,Meet the Snake”, Bauhaus University in Weimar and OPPi GLOBAL, among other communities.

TiLTING VERTICALITIES (exercise #±1 ) nests and expands a&#38;nbsp;choreographic language of movement that I have experienced as a dancer, and within other forms of lived experience. It resembles a spatial meditation sensed in direct relation to another, liberating a non-verbal, pre-linguistic form of knowledge. Moving collaboratively as in the art of dancing, the exercise reimagines the unifying act of peaceful engagement through the simple yet profound act of being in touch.

Each loop sculpture and elastic painting serves as a expanded documentation of the performance, becoming an object of experience that resonates into the future—both documentation and a resonant object—an embodied archive of the work’s choreographic life.
These materials record the encounter&#38;nbsp;without fixing it, holding memory while leaving space for future iteration.

Beyond this performative moving installation, immersive choreographic process, and participatory practice, TiLTING VERTICALITIES invites us to (re)animate, (re)imagine, and sustain dances, rituals, and conversations on different dimensions of being and caring.

“… I raise the temperature of the blood higher than that of the surrounding air by means of my burner, obtaining thus, a greater pressure on the dilation of shapes, which rise in proportion to the expansion of feelings. Beyond the surface, not many can tell what I am now seeing, for buried within the depths of the earth there is the incandescence of a lava to which I belong. This secret elasticity frightens the horizon, it is so vertiginous that I am forced to participate in a cosmic body that is sweeping everything away to keep alive. Its anatomy is huge and it must be lived. Giving each other their own quality is an alchemical process, the volatile becomes solid and the solid turns volatile, and a new state is produced; neither raising nor dropping means to float with its pages…"

TiLTING VERTICALITIES (film)HD film, colour, 7min, London, 2017

A choreographic object and dancing sculpture, performing a movement conversation and dance meditation with the public, together revisiting notions equilibrium, trust and support. 

A dance inviting us to step into moving inside and outside an material object; an elastic band suspended between two or more of us, communicating through our vertical stands; balancing with different structural tensions, inclinations, orientation and impressions.
This choreographic object circulates elastically with the continuation of the very material it constitutes. It reassembles movement materials from my lived experience as a dancer; playing &#38;amp; sharing one’s own balance and moving &#38;amp; being moved at the same time. It balances requiring the physical interaction of the viewer to complete the work; stepping into elastic bands, tilting together. It creates&#38;nbsp;a space where the re-orientation of our own vertical lives can actually happen, balancing and rebalancing tension through the feeling of movement in direct relation to each other, liberating a prelinguistic form of knowledge, and revisiting notions of trust. It collaboratively redefines the grounds that base our actions in a peaceful and unifying act of engagement in touch.
Beyond this choreographic material and with the immediacy of our perceptual movement experiences, this artwork invites the public to reimagine, reanimate and sustain dances, rituals, dimensions of being and caring together through conversations on equilibrium, interdependences, stability and change. 

Affecting effects towards peaceful states.

T h e &#38;nbsp; F l o a t i n g &#38;nbsp;B o o k &#38;nbsp;V I (film installation)
Artists own studio space, London UK, during 2017-18

An interdisciplinary collaboration between artists Margarita Zafrilla Olayo and Pato Bosich. This ongoing choreographic conversation is developed through allowing each other to gift their own qualities; neither raising nor dropping, unable to negotiate, means to float with its pages. The Floating Book grew from concerns that both practitioners had; the impossibility of seeing oneself from the outside while in movement, and the necessity of setting in motion stables frames that interrelate. In the frames, the ‘static’ materiality of the painting is given a new life by virtue of the moving image. The dancing of the film gains stability by resting in the painted and gilded surface of the wooden panel which houses the dance. Like through an alchemical process, where the volatile becomes solid and the solid turns volatile, and a new state is produced.
Within the installation, T h e&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; F l o a t i n g &#38;nbsp; B o o k___V e n u s &#38;nbsp; b y &#38;nbsp; t h e &#38;nbsp; r i v e r is a chapter that reads as a dance film and painting coming together: an arch from antiquity amidst the city, a temple and a blood stained planet welcome the film on their surfaces. We meet Venus through the moving image, herself the author and creator of her own self. She traces her new birth through the constant passing between the movement of light and gestural figuration. THE CHASE (performance)
 London and&#38;nbsp; Paris artists’ studio space 24th FEB 2019

A dance &#38;amp; music piece in 21 minutes, playing with transformations of the same, changes of organisation in us, folding &#38;amp; unfolding an elementary cosmogony in the midst of technological dialogues. We will be connecting to future distances and proximal beings while being (re)transmitted simultaneously to a gathering of poets in Paris.

Three dance artists take the plunge into the limits of comprehension by proposing a series of performance frames that question the action of seeing, doing and knowing. We are a research based collective of independent dance artists embarking on a long-term project geared towards exploring questions on the nature of experience and it’s relation to knowledge.
 Spirals &#38;amp; Horizontal Connections invites researchers from the fields of art, science and philosophy to exchange ideas and be curious together. Our current topic is embodiment.

		<description>“I started dancing when I was 5 years old and this is a place of magic. Later as a teenager, those days when I felt blue, I would still go to my dance class routine and at some point, during or after dancing, my blues were gone... I think this is what keeps me going. We could now rationalise, justifying this as some chemical processes in my brain produced by exercising in dance, or that moving with other people to the rhythm of music makes us feel better.&#38;nbsp;
Surrendering to the moment of wonderment I seek to stay with the simple memory of feeling in awe.” —Margarita Zafrilla Olayo.

Margarita Zafrilla Olayo is an artist, dancer and choreographer, balancing across practices, contexts and forms, working with dance, performance, choreographic projects, painting, still and moving-image.Her artwork, choreography, performance and dances have been presented internationally at Northern Sustainable Futures(Sweden), Loop Video Art Festival (Barcelona), Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome—MACRO, Tate Britain, Siobhan Davies Studios, Independent Dance, Sadler’s Wells, Tate Modern, Barbican Art Gallery (London), Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company—Meet The Snake, Tanzinitiative (Hamburg, GER), Ritratti D’Artista—Ascoli Piceno, (IT), Zona Maco 2022 (CDMX), Bauhaus  University-Weimar (DE), and the 58th Venice Biennale’s Giudecca Art District flagship exhibition, Body as Home.

Since 2019, she has been nurturing a choreographic context and process entitled DaNCING𓂃BaND—an ever-expanding series of somatic exercises, artworks, experimental dances, and immersive performance iterations that activate a practice towards peaceful states within the shared space of the artwork.

	Classically trained in ballet, flamenco, folk and Spanish classical dance at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza in Madrid, alongside independent studies with María de Ávila, she was awarded a Spain–United Kingdom scholarship to continue her training in London. She completed a BA (Hons) and a PgDip in Contemporary Dance and Performance at London Contemporary Dance School, followed by an MA in Creative Practice at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, delivered in partnership with Independent Dance and Siobhan Davies Studios in South London.


For the past 20 years, Zafrilla Olayo has led dance and movement workshops across education, art, and non-profit organisations. Most recently, she has facilitated movement-based studies exploring communication, interdependence, trust, and support at the Royal College of Art, University of Roehampton, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Independent Dance, and the Royal School of Speech and Drama in London. Her teaching also includes programmes at the Conservatorio Profesional Superior de Danza de Málaga in Spain, The School of Hope’s international art programme for young creatives in the UK, Bauhaus University Weimar, (Re)Thinking Leadership / Big Education, as well as projects with Chris Higgins / MAP Consortium for OPPi Global and CreateCATT Developmental Play.&#38;nbsp;

Margarita co-founded the experimental dance research platform Spirals &#38;amp; Horizontal Connections&#38;nbsp;(2012–2014) with Andrea Puerta and Natalie Heller, and the artist collective&#38;nbsp;La Ventana&#38;nbsp;(2002–2004) with Magdalen Pirzer, Thomas Pausz, and Jamie Craggs. She also collaborated as an ID Ambassador and volunteered with the artist-led organisation&#38;nbsp;Independent Dance&#38;nbsp;from 2011 to 2021.&#38;nbsp;
